Imported Dengue Fever Cases and Aedes albopictus Mosquito Density in Pennsylvania
Eighty seven imported cases of dengue fever were reported in Pennsylvania from 2010, when reporting started, to 2014.
From 2010-2014, 25 of 67 counties reported at least one case of imported dengue fever. Philadelphia, Delaware and Montgomery counties accounted for 37% of these cases. No locally transmitted cases of dengue fever have been reported in Pennsylvania. |
Probability of Dengue Virus Transmission in Pennsylvania
Probability of dengue virus transmission is the probability that a mosquito infected with the virus will pass the virus along to a human when feeding. The model, developed by Lambrechts et al. (2011), uses daily ambient temperature to determine this probability.
DENV transmission probabilities were extracted from the locations where Ae. albopictus were detected. The highest probabilities, and greatest risk of local transmission, occur during July and August. |
Aedes albopictus Occurrence and Monthly Temperatures in Pennsylvania
Eighty percent of all Ae. albopictus collected were captured between 20-28°C.
Despite being native to tropical regions, Ae. albopictus were collected at temperatures as low as 3.4°C in October.
